Piracetam has a wide variety of uses worldwide. Several countries use it as a medical agent and it is applied in a wide variety of purposes. The main medical use of piracetam is before or after a stroke as a neuroprotective agent. The substance is thought to lower risks of ischemic stroke while also reducing post-stroke damages that may occur to the brain. It also acts as an antithrombotic and anticoagulant agent and is frequently combined with other therapies without any medical risks.
Numerous studies have been carried out on the treatment of neurological disorders with Piracetam. In most of these studies, positive results have been reported, however, the results are not sufficient to approve the use as a treatment in the medical field. For example, studies on the effectiveness of Piracetam in improving symptoms of Dementia and Alzheimers patients have had positive results. Despite the evident improvement in the symptoms in these patients, it is still not an approved therapy since it has not been proved to completely reverse all the conditions or replace other drugs and therapies that are approved. As a result, Piracetam is mainly used off label. Nonetheless, its use has proved to be quite safe, with minimal toxicity, drug interactions and side effects. There is also reliable evidence indicating it can be reliable in the treatment of symptoms of Dyslexia and a number of learning disabilities and most neurological disorders, however, it is advisable to consult a licensed medical officer before relying on it as a therapy. The most widely reported benefit is the increase in sensory perception. This is usually attributed to the increase in the Acetylcholine neurotransmitter and the receptor efficiency. A sizeable population claim Piracetam is effective when used as an anti-depressant agent; however, it has not yet been approved as medication. In some users, it may exhibit anti-anxiety and anti-depressant benefits. Just like other racetams, Piracetam has been quoted to function as a brain protectant although it should not be employed as the main protective agent.
The above results may or may not be due to the enhanced vasodilation. Piracetam is also said to lower free radicals in the brain that are cited as the origin of oxidative stress. In severe cases, oxidative stress can lead to cholinergic damages that can cause Alzheimers, Dementia and a several other neurological disorders. A number of these common side effects have theoretically been attributed to be as a result of ACh receptor site burning out. To reduce this, the use of choline source supplements like CDP Choline or Alpha GPC is said to be effective.
